Discover Zagreb

A new tour to historic Croatia, based in the capital. The Zagreb Opera presents Verdi’s Il trovatore, as well as national favourite Nikola Šubić Zrinski, an opera written and composed by Ivan Zajc in 1876. This tells the story of the Battle of Szigetvár of 1566, in which Nikola Zrinski, nobleman and captain of the assembled Croatian and Hungarian forces took a heroic last stand against Ottoman forces led by Suleiman the Magnificent. Its enduring fame is due in part to its final chorus, "U boj, u boj!" ("To battle, to battle!"), written by the composer ten years prior to the rest of the opera.

Sun 10 Jun Evening arrival at Zagreb airport, and transfer to the 5-star Hotel Westin, located in the very heart of the city, adjacent to the Opera and close to the central sights.

Mon 11 Jun Morning walking tour of Zagreb, which lies between the Medvenica mountain and the Sava river. We see the main sights, including the cathedral, the Upper and Lower towns, the Stone Gate, St Mark’s Church and the Main Square. Following the tour, a welcome lunch will be served in a local restaurant. Free afternoon before the evening opera performance.

Tue 12 Jun Today we take a day excursion to the city of Varaždin, 81km north of Zagreb and known for its castle and baroque architecture. Lunch will be served in a local restaurant. Return to Zagreb for a free evening.

Wed 13 Jun Join your guide for an excursion to the exquisite Trakošćan Castle, the most impressive example in Croatia. Although the exact date of construction is not known, the castle retains 12th and 13th century features and was occupied by the aristocratic Drašković family from the 16th century. Lunch is included within the tour, before returning to Zagreb for the evening performance.

Thu 14 Jun Free morning for last-minute shopping and sightseeing. Afternoon transfer to Zagreb airport for your homeward journey.
