Salzburg Festival

29 July - 2 August 2012

Salzburg
In 2012 the Salzburg Festival celebrates its 92nd anniversary. The world-class performances offered in the Festival feature the finest artists; all in the city which still rings to the music of its most famous son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In celebration of his musical heritage, our tour features Die Zauberflöte and a concert performance of Il re pastore, together with R Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos.

Itinerary

Sun 29 Jul Lunchtime arrival in Salzburg and transfer to the 5-star Hotel Bristol. Free afternoon to settle in before a welcome dinner in a local restaurant.

Mon 30 Jul Join your guide this morning to visit the home of the Mozart family (Dancing Master's House) before we continue to the ancient Linzergasse which includes St. Sebastian’s cemetery, burial place of the Mozart family, and the Steingasse. We finish our tour at the Mirabell Gardens. Afternoon at leisure. Mid-afternoon performance at the Felsenreitschule.

Tue 31 Jul Morning walking tour through the historic part of Salzburg including Mozart’s birthplace, the Cathedral (where Mozart was christened), St. Peter’s church, St. Peter’s cemetery and the Collegiate Church (where Mozart composed his D Minor Mass). Lunch will be served at Stiftskeller St. Peter, the oldest restaurant in central Europe where the Mozart family also ate! Afternoon at leisure before the evening performance at the Haus für Mozart.

Wed 1 Aug Today we take a full-day excursion to Mondsee to visit the Basilica St. Michael. The former Benedictine collegiate church from the 12th century is one of the biggest gothic churches in Austria and is famous for its gorgeous interior. We continue on to Attersee which offers some of the most scenic countryside in the Salzkammergut. Franz Schubert, Gustav Mahler, Johannes Brahms and Gustav Klimt all enjoyed spending time here. At Steinbach am Attersee we will visit Gustav Mahler’s cottage where he resided from 1893 to 1896. It was here that he conceived parts of his Second and Third Symphony. After an included lunch we continue to Kammer and Seewalchen on the trail of Gustav Klimt; we visit the Klimt Centre before taking a short boat trip on the lake, prior to our return to Salzburg for the evening performance.

Thu 2 Aug Mid morning check-out and transfer to Munich for the homeward flight. On the way we stop at Prien/Chiemsee to visit the church of Prien with an exquisite ceiling fresco by Johann Baptist Zimmermann.
