Salzburg Festival

Our 2011 tour to the renowned Salzburg Festival is prepared in collaboration between the British Friends of the Salzburg Festival, and Travel for the Arts. The world-class performances offered feature the finest artists; notably Anna Netrebko in one of only two appearances in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta, Željko Lučić as Verdi’s Macbeth and Gerald Finley as Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Riccardo Muti, Christian Thielemann and Yannick Nézet-Séguin conduct.


Sat 20 Aug Morning departure on scheduled British Airways services from London Gatwick to Salzburg. Lunchtime arrival and transfer to the 5-star Hotel Bristol, located a few steps from the festival district. A welcome drink will be served on arrival at the hotel. In the evening enjoy drinks in the Patrons’ Lounge at the Grosses Festspielhaus, before the evening performance.

Sun 21 Aug Morning excursion to the imposing Fortress Hohensalzburg, which dominates the skyline of the city. Built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard and considerably enlarged by Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach, it is the largest fully-preserved fortress in Central Europe. Lunch in a local restaurant before a free afternoon. Optional early evening performance at the Grosses Festspielhaus.

Mon 22 Aug This morning join your guide for either an excursion to the Royal Palace at Berchtesgaden, or a tour of the delightful 17th-century Hellbrunn Palace outside Salzburg which features a beautiful park with water-features. (Schedules will be confirmed nearer the date of departure). Continue to lunch in a restaurant in Berchtesgaden, followed by a visit to spa-resort Bad Reichenhall, in a magnificent alpine setting. Return to Salzburg for the evening performance at the Felsenreitschule.

Tue 23 Aug This morning a private backstage tour of the festival complex is arranged, before your afternoon at leisure. Early evening performance at the Haus für Mozart.

Wed 24 Aug Morning transfer to the airport for your scheduled flight back to London.
