A host of operatic stars gather at the Vienna State Opera this January, for performances of three of Verdi’s masterpieces.

Itinerary
Tue 10 Jan Afternoon arrival in Vienna and transfer to the 4-star Hotel Astoria, centrally located on the elegant Kärntner Strasse pedestrian precinct and close to both the Vienna State Opera and St. Stephen’s Square. Afternoon and evening at leisure.

Wed 11 Jan Today join your guide for a walking tour ‘in the footsteps of Sisi’, the Empress Elisabeth of Bavaria. We visit the residential apartments and state rooms of Emperor Franz Joseph and Elisabeth in the Hofburg Palace, and then the tomb of the Hapsburg family, the Kapuzinergruft. Afternoon at leisure. Optional evening performance at the State Opera.

Thu 12 Jan This morning we take a tour by coach of Art Nouveau Vienna, beginning at the Secession with a stop to see the Beethoven Frieze ‘The Kiss to the Whole World’ of Gustav Klimt. The frieze is based on Richard Wagner’s interpretation of the Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. Driving along the Wienzeille we see many Art Nouveau houses including the villa of Ernest Fuchs which includes a museum dedicated to the style. Afternoon at leisure before your optional evening performance.

Fri 13 Jan Day at leisure. Optional evening performance.

Sat 14 Jan Morning at leisure, before a lunchtime transfer to the airport for your homeward journey.
