Verdi and Wagner in Valencia

The charming city of Valencia on Spain’s eastern coast presents their V Festival del Mediterrani at the impressive Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia. We attend for two greatly-anticipated performances; Verdi’s Il trovatore, and a concert version of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde. Zubin Mehta conducts.

Thu 21 Jun Afternoon arrival in Valencia via Madrid, and transfer to the 3-star NH Hotel Las Artes II, located near to the opera house. Welcome dinner in the hotel.

Fri 22 Jun This morning join your guide for a tour of Old Valencia. Founded by the Greeks in 138BC, the city has been ruled by many peoples over the ages and has also been involved in every war in Spain of the last two centuries. We visit the Cathedral whose Gothic style was completely masked by a neo-classical renovation in the 18th century, which was in turn removed. We end the tour at the Fine Arts Museum, filled with works from the 14th to the 19th centuries, and the second most important art collection in Spain. Afternoon at leisure. Evening performance at the Palau de les Arts.

Sat 23 Jun Today we visit the Albufera National Park; the year-round diverse biodiversity of the nature reserve allows a great variety of fauna and flora to thrive. Included in the tour is a boat trip and lunch in a local restaurant. Afternoon at leisure before the evening performance.

Sun 24 Jun Morning at leisure. Lunchtime transfer to the airport for your homeward journey.
